Across the Laneway: A Contemporary Home in North Vancouver

Nestled between the famed North Shore mountains and the waters of the Burrard Inlet lies this extraordinary family home in North Vancouver. This property is incredibly unique in that it occupies two lots that are connected across a lane – the first of such properties utilizing space in this manner on the North Shore. With a stack bond brick pattern, peaked roofs and multiple opportunities for full glazing, the overall aesthetic of the structures are reminiscent of modern Scandinavian-inspired design.

The northern lot contains the main home and outdoor patio complete with water features, a large outdoor dining area, veggie gardens, a state-of-the-art greenhouse, custom steel fence panels, and extensive planting throughout. The fencing and planting continue to the southern lot, designed as a large pool house and guest space. Surrounding the building is a pool deck integrated with additional areas for relaxing and entertainment, such as a sunken firepit area the dining terrace with a custom pergola overhead.

Inspiration for the shaped hedging and accompanying steel features came from the clipped beech gardens of famed Tom Stuart-Smith. The intricacy of the lots called for hundreds of design explorations.
Details from the site are complex and exhaustive in covering every inch of the properties. A portion of the boulevard planting plan, the sunken fire pit, and a few custom details are as shown.
A few select scenes from the construction stage demonstrate the intricacies of the sites, especially the install of the extensive custom steel fencing. Most trees were very large upon arrival, which will provide a mature look upon construction completion.
Some early shots taken from the model demonstrate the lush plantings and extensive functional areas with custom details throughout the sites.
