Alta Lake Mountain Residence

Emerging from a massive basalt rockface, this striking family home stands at the precipice between the rugged mountainside and the cool alpine waters of Alta Lake in Whistler. The landscape design is a study in this interface of rock and water – throughout the property, these elements find form in numerous water features that flow into contemporary hardscapes. Concepts from Frank Lloyd Wright’s work were echoed in the blurring of boundaries between architecture and landscape, creating a cohesive design language throughout the site of integration and reflection of nature.

Acid-washed dolomite limestone pavers are set with irregular edges, allowing lush perennials to soften edges and thrive in the mountain sunshine.
A series of board-formed concrete structural retaining walls throughout the site create pockets for native planting. Basalt black tusk hexagonal risers are set among soft mosses and bunchberry, flourishing yet low-maintenance.
To contrast the darker reflection of the pool and the custom powder-coated handrails and fencing, champagne-grey sandstone was cut to measure as the surfacing for all hardscaped areas.
Basalt boulders were cut and used throughout the site to echo the rock in the cliff, including the sizable boulder housing the burner for the outdoor firepit.
The planting palette includes coniferous and deciduous species that thrive in mountain conditions, such as various ferns, carexes, and stonecrops. Many are also considered pollinator species, including the native Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea).
