Contemporary Whistler Chalet

Designed as a grand Bavarian-style chalet rising from the Whistler forest, the significant grade change of this site provides opportunities for an uncommon landscape design. Of special importance to the site, the irregularly-placed concrete fin walls provide a modern ambiance; yet also provide protection from sloughing, run-off, and snow slides. The protected pockets they create are planted with native species that will provide the house with privacy and a forested atmosphere to appreciate from the spa on a snowy winter’s day.

The monstrous basalt cubes used on site were inspired by the Brutalist architecture movement, reminiscent of Seattle's renowned Freeway Park. Asymmetrical slabs are also an influence, used to conquer the significant grades.
Creating an inspiring journey from the street to the home, an undulating field of salvia varieties cascade along with native conifers and soft ferns.
Layers of enormous Whistler basalt cubes nestle the home into the mountain, and asymmetrical basalt slabs foster movement around the steep site.
