Crescent Beach Residence

Initially a simple front yard renovation that began in 2017, this project has evolved into Donohoe’s most comprehensive to date. Ultimately, the client desired a peaceful, floral garden where their family could enjoy a cup of tea while admiring their landscape and sweeping views of Boundary Bay. To achieve this, a dramatically sloped and eroding back property was reformed by the construction of a spacious cantilevered platform, incorporating numerous seating options to take in the garden or the ocean and mountain vistas. The inclusion of a plunge pool and hot tub, blackened stainless steel accents, and a completely renovated front property and house exterior were also included in the scope, creating a masterpiece of a garden worthy of its magnificent views.

The floral-abundant planting palette was selected to evolve successionally from season to season, expressing an appreciation for decay in later months.
Embedded shapes in the steel emulate the architecture in a gradient pattern. Crisp hardscapes are balanced by a wild and mixed perennial softscape.
Anchoring the landscape, a custom cantilevered 800 square-foot platform extends over lush green walls. The yellow cedar benches were custom designed alongside the client, then fabricated with a CNC milling machine.
Emerging from below the platform, a fifty-year old Scots Pine tree caps the skyline and provides filtered light to the landscape.
