Hokiokio Farm in the West Maui Mountains

Nestled high in the lush West Maui Mountain range, surrounded by a plumeria tree grove and flanked by coconut palms, this five-acre Hawaiian estate is an extraordinary example of the modern farmhouse in the style of the islands. The significant grades of the property allow for exquisite views of the ocean and Lanai in the distance, making the expansive deck and outdoor entertainment areas stunning locations to view the sunsets.

The horticultural component of the landscape design required splitting the five-acre parcel into zones of differing complexity. The zones varied from intensely planted in the immediate area around the home to only light touches on the existing natural landscape closer to the perimeter. The outer areas focused on the eradication of the invasive grasses and supported the installation of native plant species to make them more resilient, and the zones surrounding the home were planted with a local tropical palette that will thrive in the warm Maui sun.

Marking the first international project completed by Donohoe Living Landscapes (in close collaboration with interior designer Stephanie Brown Inc.), this studio’s involvement in this project is an example of building local relationships and ensuring presence and involvement throughout the project to guide development.
