Dappled: IDS Vancouver Feature Installation 2022

Designed as the central bar feature for the IDS Vancouver show in 2022, Dappled was a reflection on life’s enhanced interactions with nature post pandemic. With Covid-19 clearing our calendars, and closing almost everything but the great outdoors, nature became a place to escape.

In reference to one of nature’s most delicate yet powerful performances, the display of dappled light animates its canvas with the projection of a flickering pattern as sunlight filters through the trees. ‘Dappled’ describes the physical space of this installation, but also refers to an enhanced appreciation for the outdoors, gained through the pandemic experience.

Under 1,500 upturned and secured garden pots, the 60'x50' space was transformed into a calming oasis. Flanked by undulating gardens with thousands of potted native species, the 40' long table carved from whole cedar was planted up as densely as the forest on either sides.
Thousands of attendees took in the installation during the illustrious Opening Night Party.
Throughout the show, attendees gazed at the distorted reflection on the mirrored walls, and moved the carved stools together that were originally placed on a 6' grid - all symbolic of the pandemic experience.
Postcard collages were created by the team to interpret the misrepresentation of time, and our connection to nature during the pandemic.
